Abstract

The use of biomass as a raw material for the production of fuels and chemicals has been proposed as a viable and sustainable alternative to the traditional use of petroleum and derivatives. In this context, pyrolysis has emerged as a process for transforming biomass into a bio-oil that can be treated to provide both fuel and chemicals. One of the main steps in the treatment of this bio-oil involves the partial or total removal of oxygen contained in the material, usually by hydrogenation in the process known as hydrodeoxygenation (HDO). More specifically, this work proposes to study the use of zirconia and titania-supported rhodium catalysts in the phenol hydrodeoxygenation reaction, used as a model molecule of the bio-oil.Benzene would be the main expected product of phenol HDO, which was possible to obtain with more than 70 and 80% of selectivity for the Rh/ZrO2 and Rh/TiO2 catalysts, respectively.
