Abstract

The world faces a growing environmental acknowledgement, scarcity of fossil resources and search for materials that are less harmful to the ecosystems; alongside tendencies and technological development, new materials originated from natural sources are being researched, especially natural fibers. This work investigated the resistance behavior of polyester matrix composites reinforced with 30% by volume of a fabric constituted of fique fiber and curauá blanket by means of Izod impact tests. It has been found that the addition of fique fiber and the curauá blanket results in a marked increase in the energy absorbed by the composites. The macroscopic observation of the post-impact specimens and the analysis of SEM fractures revealed that the transverse rupture through the interface of the composites with the polyester matrix is the main mechanism for the remarkable tenacity of these composites.
