Abstract

The current paper brings forth the results obtained through ballistic tests on Multilayered Armor Systems (MAS). The tests were taken utilizing 7.62 x 51 mm caliber ammunition with bullet velocity faster than 800m/s, according to the specifications of American standard NIJ 0101.06. The MAS produced consists of 3 layers: the first, frontal, a hexagonal ceramic chip (Al2O3 doped with Ni2O5), the second, a polyester matrix composite reinforced with jute non-woven fabric and the third an aluminum (5052 H34) plate. The replacement, in the second layer, of the aramid fiber by natural fibers is highly useful, for it steeply lowers the produc-tion cost while offers the same protection level for the MAS. The reached results were satisfactory, as the depth of indentation in the clay witness attended the NIJ 0101.06 standard and through scanning electron microscope (SEM) the capture of the ceramic fragments by the jute non-woven fabric (mechanical incrustation mechanism) was identified.
